North East Aircraft Museum
The North East Aircraft Museum in Sunderland, established in 1974, showcases a diverse collection of military and civilian aircraft on the former RAF Usworth site. The museum’s grounds and hangars house various aircraft from different eras, including World War II fighters and Cold War-era jets.
Over the years, visitors and staff have reported numerous unexplained phenomena at the museum. One of the most frequently recounted ghostly encounters involves the apparition of a World War II-era pilot seen wandering among the vintage aircraft. Witnesses describe him as wearing a period-correct RAF uniform, often appearing near the Spitfire display.
Another documented paranormal occurrence involves the sound of phantom footsteps echoing through empty hangars, particularly during quiet evening hours. Staff members have reported hearing these footsteps accompanied by the faint sound of aircraft engines, despite no planes being in operation.
In the museum’s workshop area, tools have allegedly moved on their own, and some visitors have reported feeling an unseen presence watching them while examining the exhibits. Cold spots and sudden temperature drops have been experienced by both staff and guests in various locations throughout the museum grounds.
One of the most chilling accounts involves the ghostly figure of a young boy seen playing near the civilian aircraft section. Witnesses describe him as wearing 1950s-style clothing before he vanishes into thin air.
The control tower, a focal point of the museum, has been the site of several reported paranormal incidents. Staff members have heard disembodied voices and radio static when no equipment was in use, adding to the mysterious atmosphere of this historic location.
