Newport Castle
Newport Castle, perched atop Stow Hill in Newport, Wales, dates back to the 14th century. Built by Hugh de Audley, the castle served as a defensive stronghold and administrative center for the Lords of Newport. Throughout its history, the castle witnessed numerous conflicts, including the Glyndŵr Rising in the early 15th century.
The castle’s turbulent past has given rise to several reported ghostly encounters. One of the most prevalent tales involves the spirit of a young woman in a white dress, believed to be the daughter of a former castle owner. Visitors have claimed to see her apparition wandering the castle grounds, particularly near the ruined tower.
Another frequently reported phenomenon is the sound of disembodied footsteps echoing through the castle’s remaining structures. Staff and visitors alike have described hearing heavy boots marching along corridors and up staircases, only to find no one present upon investigation.
In the 1980s, a group of local historians conducting research at the castle reported seeing a shadowy figure in medieval attire near the castle’s entrance. The figure reportedly vanished when approached, leaving the witnesses startled and confused.
During renovation work in the early 2000s, workers reported tools mysteriously moving overnight and the sensation of being watched while working in isolated areas of the castle. Some even claimed to have heard whispered conversations in Old Welsh coming from empty rooms.
These recurring reports have cemented Newport Castle’s reputation as one of Wales’ most haunted locations, attracting paranormal enthusiasts and history buffs alike to explore its ancient walls and uncover its secrets.
