New Wimbledon Theatre

New Wimbledon Theatre

New Wimbledon Theatre, located in Wimbledon, London, opened its doors in 1910. Designed by Cecil Aubrey Massey and Roy Young, the Edwardian-style theater features a striking Baroque facade. Over its century-plus history, it has hosted numerous productions and famous performers, including Charlie Chaplin and Gracie Fields.

The theater has a reputation for paranormal activity, with several reported ghost sightings. One of the most well-known spirits is that of the theater’s former manager, J.B. Mulholland. Staff and visitors have reported seeing his apparition in various parts of the building, particularly near the stage and in the corridors.

Another frequently mentioned ghost is that of a young girl, believed to have fallen to her death from the upper circle during the theater’s early years. Witnesses have described seeing her ghostly figure in the auditorium and hearing unexplained childlike laughter.

The theater’s backstage areas are also said to be haunted. Actors and crew members have reported feeling an unseen presence, experiencing sudden temperature drops, and hearing unexplained footsteps when no one else is around.

In the 1970s, a security guard reported seeing a transparent figure of a woman in Victorian-era clothing gliding across the stage. This sighting led to speculation about the identity of the apparition, with some suggesting it could be the ghost of a former actress.

The theater’s dressing rooms have been the site of paranormal experiences, with performers reporting objects moving on their own and feeling watched while alone. Some have even claimed to have seen shadowy figures reflected in mirrors when no one else was present.
