Moresby Hall

Moresby Hall

Moresby Hall is a Grade I listed manor house located in Moresby, Cumbria, within the Borough of Copeland. Dating back to the 12th century, the hall has a rich history spanning over 900 years. The original structure was built by the de Moresby family, who held the manor until the 14th century. Subsequently, the Fletcher family owned the property for several generations.

The current building, primarily constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries, incorporates elements from earlier periods. It features a pele tower, a defensive structure common in border regions during medieval times. The hall’s architecture reflects various styles, including Tudor and Jacobean influences.

Moresby Hall has been the subject of numerous ghost stories and paranormal accounts over the years. One of the most prominent ghostly figures reported is that of a young woman in white, believed to be the spirit of a maid who died tragically on the property. Visitors and staff have claimed to see her apparition wandering the halls and gardens.

Another frequently reported phenomenon is the sound of disembodied footsteps echoing through the building, particularly in the upper floors and staircases. Some witnesses have described hearing the rustle of period clothing accompanying these phantom footsteps.

The library is said to be a hotspot for paranormal activity, with books reportedly moving on their own and the feeling of an unseen presence often experienced by occupants. Cold spots and sudden temperature drops have been reported throughout the building, especially in the older sections.

Some visitors have claimed to see the ghostly figure of a man in Tudor-era clothing in the grounds surrounding the hall, believed by some to be a former owner or servant. Unexplained noises, including whispers and muffled conversations, have also been reported by staff and guests alike.
