Mapperley Tunnel

Mapperley Tunnel

Mapperley Tunnel, located in Gedling, Nottinghamshire, is a disused railway tunnel that spans 1,132 yards (1,035 meters) beneath Mapperley Hills. Constructed in 1875-1876, it was part of the Nottingham Suburban Railway, connecting Nottingham to Daybrook and later extended to Newstead.

The tunnel’s construction was fraught with challenges, including unstable ground conditions and flooding. Several workers lost their lives during its creation, laying the foundation for its haunted reputation. The railway line ceased operations in 1951, and the tunnel was abandoned, its entrances sealed off.

Over the years, Mapperley Tunnel has become the subject of numerous ghost stories and paranormal encounters. One of the most frequently reported phenomena is the sound of phantom trains echoing through the sealed tunnel, despite no trains having run there for decades. Some locals claim to have heard the distinct rumble of train wheels and the hiss of steam engines.

Another recurring tale involves the apparition of a railway worker, often described as wearing Victorian-era clothing, seen near the tunnel entrances. This ghostly figure is sometimes associated with one of the workers who died during construction.

Visitors to the area have reported feeling sudden drops in temperature and an overwhelming sense of unease near the tunnel’s sealed entrances. Some have described experiencing inexplicable feelings of being watched or followed.

There are also accounts of disembodied voices and whispers echoing from within the tunnel, with some claiming to have heard cries for help or muffled conversations. These auditory phenomena are often attributed to the spirits of workers who perished during the tunnel’s construction.
