Madame Clarkes
Madame Clarke’s, located in Wolverhampton, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Originally built as a private residence, the property later served as a boarding house and eventually became a popular pub. The building’s dark past includes tales of murder, suicide, and unexplained deaths, which have contributed to its reputation as one of the most haunted locations in the West Midlands.
One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a young woman in Victorian-era clothing, believed to be Madame Clarke herself. Witnesses have described seeing her descending the stairs or peering out from upper windows. Staff and patrons have reported feeling an unseen presence brushing past them in the bar area, accompanied by sudden drops in temperature.
The cellar is another hotspot for paranormal activity, with numerous accounts of disembodied footsteps and the sound of barrels being moved when no one is present. Some employees have refused to enter the cellar alone due to an overwhelming sense of dread and the feeling of being watched.
In the 1970s, a séance conducted in the building allegedly made contact with the spirit of a former resident who had died under mysterious circumstances. Since then, visitors have reported hearing whispered conversations and seeing shadow figures in various parts of the property.
The upper floors, which once housed bedrooms, are said to be particularly active. Guests have reported hearing children’s laughter and the sound of running footsteps when no children were present. Some have even claimed to see the ghostly figure of a young boy peering out from doorways before vanishing.
