Lower Well Head Farm
Lower Well Head Farm is a historic property located in the Borough of Pendle, Lancashire, England. Dating back to the 17th century, the farm holds significant historical importance due to its connection to the infamous Pendle Witch Trials of 1612. The farm was once home to Elizabeth Southerns, also known as “Old Demdike,” who was one of the main accused in the witch trials. She lived at Lower Well Head Farm with her daughter Elizabeth Device and grandchildren James and Alizon Device, all of whom were also implicated in the trials.
The farmhouse is said to be haunted by the spirits of those involved in the witch trials. Visitors and former residents have reported various paranormal occurrences at the property. Some claim to have seen the apparition of an old woman, believed to be Old Demdike herself, wandering the grounds or peering out from windows. Others have reported hearing unexplained footsteps, doors slamming shut on their own, and sudden drops in temperature within the building.
One particularly chilling account involves the sighting of a young girl in period clothing, thought to be Jennet Device, who testified against her own family during the trials. Witnesses have described seeing her ghostly figure in the farmyard or near the old well.
The farm’s history also includes reports of poltergeist activity, with objects allegedly moving on their own or being thrown across rooms. Some visitors have claimed to experience overwhelming feelings of sadness or dread while on the property, which they attribute to the lingering energy from the tragic events of the witch trials.
