Llancaiach Fawr Manor

Llancaiach Fawr Manor

Llancaiach Fawr Manor is a Tudor manor house located in Gelligaer, Wales, constructed around 1550 for the Pritchard family. The house played a significant role during the English Civil War, with its owner Colonel Edward Pritchard supporting the Royalist cause. King Charles I visited the manor in 1645, seeking support from Pritchard.

The manor has a reputation for paranormal activity, with numerous reported ghostly encounters. Staff and visitors have described seeing apparitions, hearing unexplained footsteps, and experiencing sudden temperature drops. One of the most frequently reported spirits is that of Mattie, a former housekeeper who is said to appear in the kitchen and pantry areas. Witnesses have described seeing her manifestation and smelling the scent of baking bread.

Another commonly reported entity is the “Gray Lady,” believed to be the ghost of Cecilia Pritchard, who died in childbirth. She is said to appear on the staircase and in the bedrooms, often accompanied by the sound of a crying baby. Some visitors have reported feeling a sense of sadness or despair in certain areas of the house, particularly in the upper floors.

The ghost of a young boy has been seen playing in the halls and bedrooms, while the spirit of a Civil War-era soldier has been reported in the grounds and lower levels of the manor. Some visitors have claimed to hear the sounds of battle, including cannon fire and men shouting.

Paranormal investigators have recorded unexplained electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and captured anomalous images in photographs taken at the manor. Temperature fluctuations and electromagnetic field spikes have also been documented during investigations.
