Little Dean Jail
Little Dean Jail, located in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England, was constructed in 1791 and served as a correctional facility until its closure in 1939. The jail was designed to hold both male and female prisoners, with separate wings for each gender. It was built to replace the old county jail in Gloucester and was intended to be a more humane and reformative institution.
During its operational years, Little Dean Jail housed various types of offenders, from petty criminals to more serious offenders. The jail’s history includes accounts of harsh living conditions, corporal punishment, and even executions. Public hangings took place at the jail until 1868, after which executions were conducted within the prison walls.
The jail’s reputation for paranormal activity has grown since its closure. Numerous ghost stories and unexplained phenomena have been reported by former staff, visitors, and paranormal investigators. One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a former prisoner who is said to have been wrongfully executed. Witnesses claim to have seen his ghostly figure wandering the corridors and cells.
Another commonly reported occurrence is the sound of heavy footsteps echoing through empty hallways, often attributed to the spirits of former guards patrolling the premises. Visitors have also reported feeling sudden drops in temperature, experiencing an overwhelming sense of dread, and hearing disembodied voices and whispers.
The old execution room is said to be a particular hotspot for paranormal activity, with reports of shadowy figures and unexplained noises. Some visitors have claimed to feel a choking sensation or pressure around their necks while in this area.
