Levens Hall
Levens Hall, situated in South Lakeland, Cumbria, is a magnificent Elizabethan manor house dating back to the 13th century. The estate has been in the Bagot family since 1688 and is renowned for its topiary gardens. Over the centuries, Levens Hall has accumulated a rich tapestry of ghostly tales and paranormal encounters.
One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a Grey Lady, believed to be the ghost of Grizel Bagot, who lived in the house during the early 18th century. Visitors and staff have reported seeing her gliding through the rooms and corridors, often accompanied by the scent of roses.
The ghost of a black dog is said to haunt the grounds, particularly near the gates. Legend has it that the spectral hound belonged to the Redman family, who owned the property before the Bagots. Witnesses describe hearing phantom barks and seeing a large, dark canine figure that vanishes upon approach.
In the kitchen, staff have reported unexplained cold spots and the sound of pots and pans clattering when no one is present. Some believe this to be the spirit of a former cook who continues to oversee the kitchen’s operations.
The Blue Room is said to be particularly active, with guests reporting feelings of being watched and hearing unexplained footsteps. Some have even claimed to see the apparition of a man in Elizabethan clothing standing at the foot of the bed.
The gardens, too, have their share of paranormal activity. Visitors have reported seeing shadowy figures moving among the topiary and hearing disembodied voices near the fountain. These sightings are often attributed to the spirits of former gardeners who continue to tend to their beloved grounds.
