Leamaneh Castle
Leamaneh Castle, located in County Clare, Ireland, dates back to the 15th century. The castle was originally built as a tower house by Turlogh O’Brien and later expanded in the 17th century by Maire Rua O’Brien and her husband Conor O’Brien. The castle’s name derives from the Irish “Leim an Eich,” meaning “horse’s leap.”
Visitors and locals have reported various paranormal occurrences at Leamaneh Castle over the years. One of the most well-known ghostly inhabitants is said to be Maire Rua herself, also known as Red Mary. Witnesses claim to have seen her apparition wandering the castle grounds, often described as a woman with striking red hair dressed in period clothing.
Another frequently reported phenomenon involves the sound of horses’ hooves and carriages approaching the castle, only for witnesses to find nothing when they investigate. Some attribute this to the spirits of past visitors or residents still making their way to the castle.
There have been accounts of unexplained footsteps echoing through the empty halls of the castle, particularly in areas where the upper floors once stood. Visitors have also reported feeling sudden cold spots and experiencing an overwhelming sense of being watched while exploring the ruins.
One documented ghostly encounter involves a group of tourists who claimed to have seen a figure in 17th-century clothing peering out from one of the castle’s empty window frames, only to vanish when they approached for a closer look. Local folklore suggests this might be the spirit of Conor O’Brien, still keeping watch over his former home.
