Lanhydrock House
Lanhydrock House, located near Bodmin in Cornwall, is a late Victorian country house with a rich history dating back to the 17th century. The original Jacobean house was built in 1620 by Sir Richard Robartes, but a devastating fire in 1881 destroyed much of the building. The house was extensively rebuilt and remodeled in the 1880s, preserving some of its 17th-century features while adopting a more Victorian aesthetic.
The house has been associated with several ghost stories over the years. One of the most well-known spectral residents is said to be Lady Juliana Robartes, who lived in the house during the 17th century. Visitors and staff have reported sightings of a grey lady, believed to be Lady Juliana, walking through the corridors and rooms of the house.
Another frequently reported apparition is that of a young boy, often seen playing in the nursery and long gallery. Some witnesses claim to have heard the sound of children’s laughter echoing through empty rooms.
The ghost of a former maid is said to haunt the servants’ quarters, with reports of unexplained footsteps and the rustle of skirts in the corridors. Some staff members have reported feeling an unseen presence watching them as they work in these areas.
In the library, visitors have reported seeing the ghostly figure of a man dressed in Cavalier-style clothing, believed to be a member of the Robartes family from the English Civil War era. Books have reportedly been seen moving on their own in this room.
The grounds of Lanhydrock have also been the site of paranormal activity, with reports of spectral monks walking in the gardens and a phantom carriage heard traveling along the driveway at night.
