Kidwelly Castle

Kidwelly Castle

Kidwelly Castle, located in the town of Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, Wales, is a Norman stronghold with a history dating back to 1106. The castle was initially constructed as a wooden fortification by Roger, Bishop of Salisbury, and later rebuilt in stone during the 13th century. It played a significant role in various conflicts, including the Welsh uprising led by Owain Glyndŵr in the early 15th century.

The castle’s most famous historical figure is Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd, a Welsh princess who led an army against the Normans in 1136. She was captured and executed near the castle, and her story has become intertwined with the site’s paranormal lore.

Numerous ghost sightings have been reported at Kidwelly Castle over the years. The most frequently encountered apparition is that of Gwenllian herself, often described as a spectral white figure seen walking along the castle walls or in the courtyard. Visitors have reported feeling a sense of unease and hearing unexplained sounds in the areas associated with her story.

Another ghostly presence said to haunt the castle is that of a young boy, believed to be the son of a garrison commander. Witnesses have reported seeing the boy’s apparition playing in the castle grounds and hearing his laughter echoing through the ruins.

The castle’s gatehouse is also said to be a hotspot for paranormal activity, with reports of shadowy figures and unexplained cold spots. Some visitors have claimed to hear the sounds of battle, including clashing swords and men shouting, particularly in the early morning hours.
