Inveraray Castle

Inveraray Castle

Inveraray Castle, located in Inveraray, Argyll, Scotland, has been the ancestral home of the Dukes of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell, since the 18th century. The current castle was built in 1746 on the site of an earlier 15th-century castle. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, it features four conical spires and intricate stonework.

The castle has a rich history of reported paranormal activity. One of the most famous ghosts is the “Grey Lady,” believed to be the spirit of a young harpist who was executed in the 17th century for stealing food. Visitors and staff have reported seeing her apparition in various parts of the castle, often accompanied by the sound of harp music.

Another notable ghost is the “Ghost of the Galley,” a spectral ship said to appear on Loch Fyne when a member of the Campbell family is about to die. This legend dates back to the 17th century and has been reported multiple times throughout the castle’s history.

The castle’s kitchen is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a young boy who was a kitchen servant in the 19th century. Staff members have reported feeling a presence and hearing unexplained noises in this area.

In the library, the ghost of the 5th Duke of Argyll has been seen sitting in his favorite chair. He is said to appear when significant decisions affecting the Campbell family are being made.

The castle’s grounds are also said to be haunted by the spirits of executed Jacobite rebels. Visitors have reported hearing screams and seeing shadowy figures near the old execution site.
