Mansion House in St Helens, Merseyside, dates back to the early 19th century when it was built as a private residence for the Pilkington family, prominent local glassmakers. The Georgian-style mansion later served as a hospital during World War I before becoming council offices in the 1930s. Throughout its history, Mansion House has accumulated a reputation for paranormal activity.

Staff and visitors have reported encounters with the ghost of a young woman in Victorian-era clothing, believed to be Sarah Cowley, a former resident who died in the house in the 1850s. She has been seen walking the corridors and standing at windows, particularly on the first floor.

Another frequently reported apparition is that of a World War I soldier, possibly a patient from the building’s time as a hospital. Witnesses describe seeing him in military uniform, often near the grand staircase or in the basement areas. Some have reported hearing the sound of marching footsteps when no one else is present.

In the 1980s, a council worker claimed to have seen a ghostly figure in a top hat and tails in the main entrance hall. This sighting correlates with stories of a male presence believed to be a former owner of the house.

Unexplained noises are common, including disembodied voices, doors slamming, and the sound of furniture being moved in empty rooms. Several employees have reported feeling watched or experiencing sudden cold spots, particularly in the older parts of the building. These occurrences have led to Mansion House being regarded as one of St Helens’ most haunted locations.
