HMP Shrewsbury, also known as The Dana, was a prison located in Shrewsbury, England. Established in 1793, it served as a correctional facility for over two centuries until its closure in 2013. The prison’s history is marked by numerous executions, with seven condemned prisoners meeting their fate within its walls between 1902 and 1961.

The prison’s foreboding atmosphere has given rise to numerous ghostly tales. Staff and inmates have reported unexplained phenomena throughout the years. One of the most frequently sighted apparitions is that of a “Grey Lady,” believed to be the spirit of a woman who was executed for murdering her husband. Witnesses claim to have seen her wandering the prison wings, often accompanied by a sudden drop in temperature.

Another notable spectral resident is said to be the ghost of a former prison guard. His heavy footsteps have been heard echoing through empty corridors, and some have reported feeling an unseen presence watching them in certain areas of the prison.

The C-wing, which housed the prison’s execution chamber, is particularly associated with paranormal activity. Visitors and former staff have described feeling overwhelming sensations of dread and sadness in this area. Some have even claimed to hear the sound of a trapdoor opening, reminiscent of the hangings that once took place there.

The prison’s chapel has also been a hotspot for ghostly encounters. People have reported seeing shadowy figures moving among the pews and hearing disembodied voices whispering prayers.

One of the most chilling accounts involves the sighting of a young boy’s ghost in the prison’s exercise yard. Witnesses describe him as appearing lost and confused, possibly connected to the prison’s history of incarcerating young offenders.
