HMP Gloucester
HMP Gloucester, located in Gloucester, England, operated as a prison from 1791 to 2013. Originally built on the site of a Norman castle, the facility has a dark history spanning over two centuries. During its early years, it housed both men and women, with harsh conditions and overcrowding being common. Public executions took place outside the prison until 1864, after which they were conducted within the walls until the last hanging in 1939.
The prison’s paranormal reputation stems from numerous reported ghostly encounters. Staff and inmates have described unexplained footsteps, disembodied voices, and sudden temperature drops throughout the building. The old chapel is said to be particularly active, with witnesses reporting the sound of phantom hymns and the apparition of a woman in Victorian-era clothing.
One of the most infamous spirits is believed to be that of Jenny, a young woman who allegedly took her own life in her cell. Her presence is said to manifest as a feeling of despair and the sound of weeping in the women’s wing. In the execution room, people have reported feeling an oppressive atmosphere and seeing shadowy figures.
The A-wing, one of the oldest parts of the prison, is known for sightings of spectral inmates and guards. Visitors have described hearing the rattling of keys and cell doors slamming shut on their own. Some have even claimed to feel unseen hands touching them or tugging at their clothes.
The kitchen area is another hotspot for paranormal activity, with reports of objects moving on their own and the smell of phantom cooking. Staff have recounted experiences of feeling watched and hearing their names called when no one else was present.
