Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Palace, located in Richmond upon Thames, London, was originally built in 1515 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. King Henry VIII later acquired the palace and expanded it significantly. The palace served as a royal residence for over 200 years, housing monarchs such as Elizabeth I, James I, and William III.

The palace is renowned for its alleged paranormal activity. One of the most famous ghost stories involves Catherine Howard, Henry VIII’s fifth wife. Executed for treason in 1542, her spirit is said to haunt the Haunted Gallery, where she reportedly ran screaming to beg Henry for mercy. Visitors and staff have reported hearing her cries and feeling a sudden drop in temperature in this area.

Another well-known ghost is that of Jane Seymour, Henry VIII’s third wife, who died at Hampton Court shortly after giving birth to Edward VI. Her apparition has been seen carrying a candle on the Silverstick Stairs, particularly on the anniversary of Edward’s birth.

The Grey Lady, believed to be Sybil Penn (a servant to Edward VI and Elizabeth I), is said to haunt the State Apartments and Clock Court. Her apparition was first reported after her tomb was disturbed in 1829.

King Henry VIII himself is said to haunt the palace, with reports of his large figure being seen in the corridors. Some visitors have claimed to hear his labored breathing and the tapping of his walking stick.

The palace’s kitchens are also reportedly haunted, with staff and visitors reporting strange noises, moving objects, and the feeling of being watched. Some have even claimed to see the ghost of a Tudor chef still at work.
