Gwydir Castle

Gwydir Castle

Gwydir Castle, located near Llanrwst in North Wales, dates back to the 14th century. The Tudor-style mansion was originally built by the Coetmor family and later owned by the influential Wynn family from the 1480s until 1780. The castle underwent significant renovations in the 1540s under Sir John Wynn.

Gwydir Castle has a long-standing reputation for paranormal activity. One of the most famous ghost stories involves the spirit of a young woman murdered in the 16th century by Sir John Wynn. According to legend, her body was concealed within a wall cavity, and her restless spirit is said to haunt the castle’s North Wing.

Another reported apparition is that of a monk, believed to be associated with a secret tunnel that once connected the castle to a nearby monastery. Visitors and staff have reported seeing the ghostly figure in various parts of the building.

The “Ghost Room” is particularly notorious for paranormal occurrences. Guests have reported feeling an oppressive atmosphere, sudden temperature drops, and witnessing unexplained shadows. Some have even claimed to see the apparition of a young girl in this room.

Sir John Wynn himself is said to haunt the castle, with reports of his ghost being seen in the Hall of Meredith and other areas. Witnesses have described hearing footsteps, doors slamming, and experiencing an overwhelming sense of being watched.

The castle’s history of plague victims being housed on the grounds has led to reports of multiple spirits wandering the gardens and surrounding areas. Photographic anomalies and unexplained sounds have been documented by visitors and paranormal investigators over the years.
