George Street Cemetery

George Street Cemetery

George Street Cemetery in York, England, dates back to the 18th century and served as a burial ground until its closure in the 1850s. The site has since been converted into a public garden, but its ghostly reputation persists. One of the most well-known spectral inhabitants is said to be a young girl in Victorian-era clothing, often spotted wandering among the gravestones at dusk. Witnesses have reported seeing her fade away when approached.

Another frequently encountered apparition is that of an elderly man wearing a top hat and carrying a cane. He is said to materialize near a particular grave, believed to be his final resting place. Visitors have described feeling an unexplained drop in temperature and a sense of being watched when passing this area.

The cemetery is also known for its auditory phenomena. People have reported hearing disembodied whispers, footsteps on gravel paths when no one is visible, and the faint sound of a child’s laughter echoing through the grounds after dark.

In the 1980s, a group of local teenagers claimed to have witnessed a ghostly funeral procession moving silently through the cemetery at midnight. They described seeing translucent figures carrying a coffin, accompanied by mourners in period dress.

A more recent account involves a groundskeeper who reported seeing a woman in white kneeling by a gravestone, apparently in prayer. When he approached to check on her, she vanished, leaving no footprints in the dew-covered grass. These persistent reports have cemented George Street Cemetery’s reputation as one of York’s most haunted locations.
