Gate Studios
Gate Studios, located in Borehamwood, Hertsmere, has a rich history in the British film industry dating back to 1928. Originally known as British National Studios, it was founded by J.D. Williams and later became part of the Associated British Picture Corporation. The studio played a significant role in producing numerous films and television shows throughout the 20th century.
During World War II, Gate Studios was utilized for the production of propaganda films and military training videos. In the post-war era, it continued to be a bustling hub for film and television production, hosting popular shows like “The Avengers” and “The Saint.”
The studio’s paranormal reputation stems from various reported ghostly encounters over the years. Staff and visitors have claimed to experience unexplained phenomena, particularly in the older parts of the complex. One frequently reported apparition is that of a man in 1940s-style clothing, believed to be a former employee from the studio’s early days.
Another notable ghost story involves the sound of phantom footsteps echoing through empty corridors, often accompanied by the smell of cigarette smoke when no one is present. Some have attributed these occurrences to the spirit of a chain-smoking director who allegedly died on the premises.
In the props department, items have been reported to move on their own, and disembodied voices have been heard when the area was supposedly empty. Some employees have also claimed to feel sudden cold spots and an eerie sense of being watched while working late at night.
The studio’s long history and the intense emotions often associated with the entertainment industry have led some to speculate that these factors contribute to the reported paranormal activity at Gate Studios.
