Fort Paull
Fort Paull, located in the village of Paull near Hull, East Yorkshire, is a historic fortification with roots dating back to 1542. Originally built as part of Henry VIII’s coastal defense system, the fort was rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. The current structure mostly dates from the 1860s, when it was modernized to defend against potential French invasion.
During World War I and II, Fort Paull served as a key defensive position, housing troops and anti-aircraft guns. It was decommissioned in 1960 after over 400 years of military use.
Numerous ghostly encounters have been reported at Fort Paull. One of the most frequently sighted apparitions is that of a World War II soldier, often seen patrolling the ramparts or standing guard near the entrance. Visitors have described hearing phantom footsteps echoing through empty corridors and feeling unseen presences in various parts of the fort.
Another commonly reported phenomenon is the sound of children’s laughter and running footsteps, particularly in the underground tunnels. Some speculate these could be the spirits of evacuees who took shelter in the fort during wartime air raids.
In the officers’ quarters, witnesses have reported seeing the ghostly figure of a woman in Victorian-era dress, believed to be the wife of a former commanding officer. Cold spots, unexplained noises, and objects moving on their own have also been experienced in this area.
The ammunition stores are said to be a hotspot for paranormal activity, with visitors reporting sudden temperature drops and feelings of unease. Some have claimed to hear the sounds of distant explosions or cannon fire when no such noises should be present.
