Eliot Arms

Eliot Arms

The Eliot Arms, a 17th-century inn located in the quiet village of South Petherwin, Cornwall, has a rich history and reputation for paranormal activity. Originally built in 1636, the pub has served as a focal point for the local community for centuries. During the English Civil War, it was used as a meeting place for Royalist supporters, and legend has it that secret tunnels beneath the building were used to hide fugitives.

Over the years, staff and patrons have reported numerous ghostly encounters at the Eliot Arms. One of the most frequently sighted spirits is that of a young woman in Victorian-era clothing, often seen gliding through the bar area and disappearing into walls. Some believe she may be the ghost of a former barmaid who died tragically on the premises.

Another recurring apparition is that of an elderly man in farming attire, who has been spotted sitting quietly in the corner of the pub before vanishing into thin air. Local lore suggests he may be the spirit of a former regular who simply couldn’t bear to leave his favorite haunt.

Unexplained phenomena have also been reported, including glasses sliding off tables on their own, sudden cold spots in various rooms, and the sound of footsteps echoing from empty upstairs rooms. Some staff members have described feeling an unseen presence watching them as they close up for the night.

One particularly chilling incident involved a group of guests who claimed to have heard the distant sound of battle cries and clashing swords coming from the direction of the old tunnels, possibly echoes from its tumultuous Civil War past.
