One of the most famous ghost stories associated with Earlshall Castle revolves around “Bloody Bruce,” also known as William Bruce. He earned his nickname due to his brutal actions during the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689. According to legend, his ghost can be heard pacing the castle’s spiral staircase, his wooden leg creating a distinctive sound as he moves.

Another reported paranormal phenomenon at Earlshall Castle is the ghostly sound of a dinner party. Witnesses have claimed to hear the clinking of glasses, laughter, and conversation emanating from empty rooms, particularly in the area of the Great Hall.

The castle is also said to be haunted by the spirit of a young maid who allegedly fell to her death from one of the upper floors. Visitors and staff have reported seeing her apparition and feeling a cold presence in certain areas of the castle.
