Dunster Castle
Dunster Castle, situated in Somerset West and Taunton, has a rich history dating back to the 11th century. Originally constructed as a motte and bailey fortress by William de Mohun, the castle underwent significant modifications over the centuries. The Luttrell family acquired the property in the 14th century and owned it until 1976 when it was transferred to the National Trust.
The castle has been the site of numerous reported paranormal occurrences. One of the most well-known ghost stories involves the “Man in Green,” believed to be the spirit of a Royalist soldier from the English Civil War. Visitors and staff have reported seeing this figure walking through walls and disappearing into thin air.
Another frequently reported apparition is that of a lady in gray, often seen descending the main staircase. Some speculate this could be the ghost of a former resident or servant.
The castle’s library is said to be haunted by the spirit of a young girl, with reports of ghostly laughter and the sound of running footsteps when no one is present.
In the kitchen area, staff have reported unexplained cold spots and the feeling of being watched. Some have even claimed to see kitchen utensils moving on their own.
The grounds of Dunster Castle are not exempt from paranormal activity. The ghost of a monk has been reported walking near the old priory gatehouse, while phantom horses have been heard galloping in the vicinity of the former stables.
Several visitors have also reported experiencing sudden and inexplicable feelings of dread or sadness in certain areas of the castle, particularly in the older sections of the building.
