Dunluce Castle

Dunluce Castle

Dunluce Castle, perched precariously on the rugged Antrim coast of Northern Ireland, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The medieval fortress, once home to the MacDonnell clan, has weathered centuries of conflict and witnessed numerous tragedies. Its dramatic clifftop location and tumultuous past have given rise to several ghostly tales.

One of the most well-known spectral residents is said to be Maeve Roe, daughter of Lord MacQuillan. According to legend, she was locked in a tower by her father for refusing to marry her suitor. She attempted to escape with her true love, but their boat capsized, and both drowned. Her ghost is said to wander the ruins, eternally searching for her lost love.

The castle’s kitchens are associated with another chilling story. In 1639, during a lavish dinner party, the kitchen suddenly collapsed into the sea, taking several servants with it. Some visitors claim to hear phantom screams and the clatter of pots and pans on stormy nights.

A ghostly piper is also said to haunt the grounds. The story goes that he discovered a secret cave beneath the castle and ventured inside to explore, playing his pipes as he went. He was never seen again, but his music can sometimes be heard echoing from below the castle.

The “White Lady” is another frequently reported apparition. Believed to be the spirit of a former resident, she is often seen gliding along the castle walls or gazing out to sea from the tower windows.
