Dashwood House
Dashwood House in West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, was built in the 18th century by Sir Francis Dashwood, founder of the infamous Hellfire Club. The estate has a long history of reported paranormal activity. Visitors and staff have described encountering the ghost of Sir Francis himself, often seen wandering the grounds or sitting in his study. His apparition is said to be accompanied by the scent of tobacco smoke.
The spirit of a young woman in white has been observed on multiple occasions, believed to be Dashwood’s niece who allegedly died of a broken heart. She is most frequently spotted near the grand staircase or gazing out of upper floor windows. Some witnesses claim to have heard her sobbing late at night.
In the cellars, people have reported feeling an oppressive atmosphere and sensing an unseen presence. Cold spots and unexplained noises are common occurrences in this area. Several visitors have described seeing shadowy figures darting between the wine racks.
The gardens of Dashwood House are also said to be haunted. Groundskeepers have reported tools moving on their own and the sound of footsteps when no one else is present. A ghostly monk has been seen walking the paths at dusk, believed to be connected to the nearby Church of St. Lawrence.
During World War II, when the house was used as a billet for American airmen, several soldiers reported paranormal experiences, including doors opening and closing on their own and the sound of disembodied voices echoing through the corridors.
