Crathes Castle

Crathes Castle

Crathes Castle, located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was built in the 16th century by the Burnett family. The construction began in 1553 and was completed in 1596 under the supervision of Alexander Burnett. The castle remained in the Burnett family’s possession until 1951 when it was gifted to the National Trust for Scotland.

The castle has a rich history of reported paranormal activity. One of the most well-known ghost stories involves the Green Lady, believed to be the spirit of a young woman who served in the castle. Legend says she was discovered to be pregnant, possibly by a member of the Burnett family, and subsequently disappeared. Her ghost has been seen in the Green Lady’s Room, often carrying an infant.

Another ghostly figure reported at Crathes Castle is that of Lady Agnes Burnett, who lived in the castle during the 17th century. Visitors have claimed to see her apparition in various parts of the building, particularly in the drawing room.

The castle’s tower house has been the site of numerous unexplained phenomena. Staff and visitors have reported hearing footsteps, whispers, and the sound of piano music when no one else was present. Some have also experienced sudden temperature drops and the feeling of being watched.

In the 1800s, skeletal remains of a woman and child were discovered behind a fireplace during renovations, adding credence to the legend of the Green Lady. This discovery has fueled speculation about the identity of the ghosts and their connection to the castle’s history.
