Craig-y-Nos Castle
Craig-y-Nos Castle, located in Pen y Cae, Wales, was built in 1841 by Captain Rice Davies Powell. In 1878, it was purchased by opera singer Adelina Patti, who significantly expanded the property. Patti lived there until her death in 1919, after which it became a tuberculosis hospital for children and young adults, operating from 1922 to 1986.
The castle’s paranormal reputation stems from its history as both a private residence and a hospital. Numerous ghost sightings have been reported over the years. One of the most frequently encountered spirits is said to be that of Adelina Patti herself, often seen in her former private quarters and heard singing in various parts of the castle.
Another commonly reported apparition is that of a young girl, believed to be a former tuberculosis patient, seen on the stairs and in the corridors. Visitors and staff have described hearing children’s laughter and footsteps when no children were present.
In the castle’s old ward areas, people have reported seeing ghostly figures of patients and medical staff. Some visitors claim to have experienced sudden drops in temperature and feelings of being watched or touched.
The castle’s cellars are said to be particularly active, with reports of shadowy figures and unexplained noises. Some have claimed to hear the sound of a woman screaming in this area.
Other paranormal occurrences include objects moving on their own, doors opening and closing inexplicably, and lights turning on and off without apparent cause. Some visitors have reported feeling a sense of heaviness or oppression in certain rooms, particularly those associated with the building’s time as a hospital.
