Comlongon Castle

Comlongon Castle, located in Clarencefield, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, dates back to the 15th century. The original tower house was built by the Murrays of Cockpool around 1426. In 1634, the castle was expanded with a three-story mansion house attached to the tower.

The castle’s most famous ghost is said to be Lady Marion Carruthers, known as the “Green Lady.” According to local legend, Marion was forced into an arranged marriage with Sir James Douglas of Drumlanrig in 1570. Desperate to escape the union, she supposedly threw herself from the lookout tower, falling to her death on September 25, 1570.

Since then, there have been numerous reported sightings of Marion’s ghost, often described as a green mist or a woman in a green dress. Witnesses claim to have seen her wandering the castle grounds, particularly near the spot where she allegedly fell.

Other paranormal occurrences reported at Comlongon Castle include unexplained noises, such as footsteps and doors slamming, as well as sudden temperature drops in certain areas. Some visitors have claimed to feel a sense of unease or being watched, especially in the tower where Marion is said to have died.

The castle’s great hall is another location where paranormal activity has been reported. Guests have described seeing shadowy figures and experiencing feelings of dread or sadness in this area.

In addition to Marion’s ghost, there have been reports of other spectral entities at Comlongon Castle, including a male figure believed to be a former caretaker and the spirits of children playing in the corridors.
