Codnor Castle & Cottage
Codnor Castle, located in Amber Valley, Derbyshire, is a ruined 13th-century stone keep and bailey fortress. Originally built by William Peverel, it was later owned by the de Grey family for over three centuries. The castle played a significant role during the Baron’s Revolt against King John in 1215. In the 15th century, it was involved in the Wars of the Roses, with Lord Grey fighting for the Lancastrian cause.
The castle fell into disrepair during the 16th century and was eventually abandoned. By the 18th century, it had become a romantic ruin, inspiring artists and writers. The nearby Codnor Castle Cottage, built in the 16th century, served as a farmhouse for the estate.
Paranormal activity has been reported at both the castle ruins and the cottage. Ghostly sightings include a soldier in medieval armor, believed to be a guard from the castle’s heyday. Visitors have reported hearing unexplained footsteps and feeling sudden temperature drops in certain areas of the ruins.
The cottage has its own share of supernatural occurrences. A gray lady has been seen walking through walls, and the ghost of a young girl is said to haunt the upper floors. Witnesses have reported objects moving on their own and strange noises echoing through the building at night.
One of the most famous ghost stories associated with Codnor Castle involves a spectral hunting party. Locals claim to have seen ghostly horsemen and heard the sound of barking hounds in the surrounding fields, particularly on moonlit nights.
