Coalhouse Fort
Coalhouse Fort, situated on the north bank of the Thames Estuary in Essex, England, has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. The current structure, built in the 1860s, served as a defense fortification during both World Wars. Over the years, numerous ghostly encounters have been reported within its walls and grounds.
One of the most frequently sighted apparitions is that of a uniformed soldier, believed to be from the Victorian era. Witnesses have described seeing him patrolling the ramparts and suddenly vanishing into thin air. Another recurring spectral figure is a young woman in a white dress, often spotted near the fort’s entrance. Some visitors have reported feeling an overwhelming sense of sadness when encountering her presence.
In the fort’s underground tunnels, staff and visitors alike have reported hearing disembodied footsteps echoing through the corridors when no one else is present. Some have even claimed to feel unseen hands touching or pushing them while exploring these dimly lit passages.
The parade ground has been the site of several paranormal experiences, including the sound of phantom marching and drill commands being shouted when the area is empty. Additionally, visitors have reported seeing shadowy figures darting between buildings and disappearing around corners.
In the officers’ quarters, people have described hearing muffled conversations and laughter, only to find the rooms completely vacant upon investigation. The fort’s kitchen area has also been a hotspot for unexplained activity, with reports of objects moving on their own and the lingering scent of tobacco smoke when no one has been smoking.
