Clumber Park
Clumber Park, located in Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire, was once the country estate of the Dukes of Newcastle. The original Clumber House, built in 1768, was demolished in 1938 after a series of fires. The park’s history dates back to the 12th century when it was part of Sherwood Forest.
The estate has a rich paranormal history, with numerous ghost sightings reported over the years. One of the most famous apparitions is the “Grey Lady,” believed to be the ghost of a maid who died in a fire at the original house. Visitors have reported seeing her wandering the grounds, particularly near the chapel.
Another well-documented ghost is that of a young boy, often seen playing near the lake. Some speculate he may have drowned there, though his identity remains unknown. Staff and visitors have reported hearing his laughter and seeing his reflection in the water.
The Gothic Revival chapel, built in 1886, is said to be haunted by a spectral organist. Witnesses have heard organ music playing when the building was empty, and some have seen a ghostly figure seated at the instrument.
In the 1980s, a group of paranormal investigators reported encountering a phantom carriage near the site of the old house. The sound of horses’ hooves and creaking wheels has been heard by multiple witnesses over the years.
The park’s walled kitchen garden is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a gardener, still tending to his plants in the afterlife. Visitors have described seeing a misty figure moving among the vegetable beds and hearing the sound of invisible footsteps on gravel paths.
