Clopton House

Clopton House

Clopton House, located in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, dates back to the late 15th century. The Tudor manor house was originally built by Hugh Clopton, a wealthy merchant who later became Lord Mayor of London. The property has a rich history intertwined with the Shakespeare family, as William Shakespeare’s granddaughter Elizabeth Nash once resided there.

The house has garnered a reputation for paranormal activity over the centuries. One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of Charlotte Clopton, a young woman who allegedly died of the plague in the 16th century. According to local lore, Charlotte was mistakenly believed to be dead and was sealed in the family vault. When the vault was reopened years later, her skeletal remains were found at the door, suggesting she had awoken and tried to escape. Visitors and staff have reported seeing her ghostly figure wandering the grounds, particularly near the old family chapel.

Another notable ghost story involves the spirit of a cavalier from the English Civil War era. Witnesses have described seeing a man in 17th-century attire roaming the halls and gardens. Some accounts claim to have heard the sound of phantom footsteps and the rustling of period clothing when no one else is present.

The property’s long gallery is said to be a hotspot for paranormal activity, with reports of unexplained cold spots, disembodied voices, and the sensation of being watched. Some visitors have also reported seeing the apparition of a young boy in Victorian-era clothing playing in this area of the house.
