Clearwell Caves

Clearwell Caves

Clearwell Caves, located in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England, is an ancient iron ore mine with a history dating back over 4,500 years. The caves were extensively mined during the Roman occupation of Britain and continued to be worked until the 1940s. The network of caverns extends for several miles underground, with nine caves open to the public.

Throughout its long history, Clearwell Caves has been the subject of numerous ghost stories and paranormal reports. One of the most well-known tales involves the spirit of a young miner who died in a cave-in. Visitors and staff have reported hearing his ghostly footsteps echoing through the tunnels and feeling an unexplained presence nearby.

Another frequently reported phenomenon is the sound of picks striking rock, as if invisible miners are still at work in the depths of the caves. These phantom sounds are often accompanied by sudden drops in temperature and feelings of unease.

The “Monk’s Chamber,” a section of the caves, is said to be haunted by the spirit of a medieval monk who sought refuge in the caves during times of religious persecution. Witnesses have described seeing a shadowy figure in a hooded robe moving silently through this area.

Some visitors have reported seeing strange lights or orbs floating through the caverns, while others claim to have captured unexplained figures in photographs taken inside the mines. The caves’ long history of accidents and harsh working conditions has led to speculation that the spirits of those who perished in the mines continue to linger in the underground labyrinth.
