Church Brow
Church Brow is a historic street in Clitheroe, Lancashire, England, situated near the town’s Norman castle. Dating back to medieval times, it was originally part of the old town center and served as a main route to St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, which was consecrated in 1135.
The area has a rich history of reported paranormal activity. One of the most well-known ghost stories involves the spirit of a young girl seen walking along Church Brow, often described as wearing a white dress and appearing translucent. Witnesses have reported seeing her vanish into thin air or pass through solid objects.
Another frequently reported apparition is that of a monk, believed to be associated with the nearby Whalley Abbey. Sightings of the ghostly monk typically occur in the early morning hours, with witnesses describing a hooded figure gliding silently along the street before disappearing.
The Brownlow Arms, a former pub on Church Brow, was said to be haunted by the ghost of a former landlord. Staff and patrons reported inexplicable cold spots, objects moving on their own, and the sound of footsteps when no one else was present.
In the 1800s, there were reports of a phantom coach and horses traveling along Church Brow, often heard but rarely seen. Some locals believed it to be an omen of impending death.
A more recent ghostly tale involves the spirit of a World War II soldier seen near the war memorial at the top of Church Brow. Witnesses have described a man in military uniform standing at attention before fading from view.
