Chenies Manor House

Chenies Manor House

Chenies Manor House, located in Latimer, Buckinghamshire, is a Tudor-era mansion with roots dating back to the 13th century. The estate was originally owned by the Cheyne family before passing to the Russell family, who became the Dukes of Bedford. The current structure, built in the 1530s, incorporates elements from an earlier medieval building.

The manor has a rich history of paranormal activity. One of the most well-known ghostly residents is said to be Lady Russell, wife of the first Earl of Bedford. Witnesses have reported seeing her apparition in the Long Gallery, often described as a grey figure gliding silently across the room. Some visitors claim to have felt an unexplained cold spot in this area.

Another frequently reported phenomenon is the sound of children’s laughter and footsteps echoing through the empty corridors, particularly in the upper floors. These spectral sounds are believed to be connected to the many children who lived and died in the house over the centuries.

The grounds of Chenies Manor are also said to be haunted. The ghost of a cavalier from the English Civil War period has been spotted near the old well, while phantom monks have been reported walking in the gardens, possibly connected to a nearby former monastery.

In the kitchen area, staff and visitors have experienced unexplained sensations of being watched and have reported objects moving on their own. Some have even claimed to smell bread baking when the ovens were not in use.

The manor’s dungeon, now sealed off, is reputed to be a hotspot for paranormal activity, with visitors reporting feelings of dread and hearing disembodied voices when near the entrance.
