Charleville Castle

Charleville Castle

Charleville Castle, located in County Offaly, Ireland, was built in the early 19th century by Charles William Bury, the First Earl of Charleville. The Gothic-style castle, designed by Francis Johnston, took over a decade to complete and stands as a testament to the Anglo-Irish aristocracy of the time.

The castle gained notoriety for its paranormal activity, with numerous ghostly encounters reported over the years. One of the most well-known spirits is that of Harriet, the youngest daughter of the third Earl of Charleville, who died tragically in 1861 at the age of eight after falling from the main staircase. Visitors and staff have reported hearing her childlike laughter echoing through the halls and seeing her apparition on the stairs where she met her untimely demise.

Another frequently encountered spirit is believed to be that of a young boy in blue velvet, often seen in the King’s bedroom. Witnesses have described feeling a cold presence and seeing the boy’s reflection in mirrors before he vanishes.

The castle’s chapel is said to be haunted by the ghost of a priest, with people reporting the smell of incense and the sound of Gregorian chanting when no one else is present. In the dungeon area, visitors have experienced feelings of dread and heard disembodied screams, possibly linked to the castle’s darker history.

Charleville Castle’s reputation for paranormal activity has attracted ghost hunters and curious visitors from around the world, all eager to experience the eerie atmosphere and possibly encounter one of its many reported spirits.
