Chambercombe Manor, located near Ilfracombe in North Devon, England, dates back to the 11th century. The manor house was originally built by the Champernon family and has undergone various alterations and additions over the centuries. In the 16th century, it came into the possession of the Ley family, who owned it for several generations.
The manor gained notoriety for its alleged paranormal activity, with numerous ghost sightings reported over the years. One of the most famous stories involves the discovery of a secret room in the 1800s. According to legend, the room contained a four-poster bed with the skeletal remains of a woman. Some believe this to be the ghost of a young woman who was shipwrecked nearby and brought to the manor, where she died.
Another prominent ghost story centers around the “Lady in Grey,” believed to be Kate Oatway, a former resident of the manor. Witnesses have reported seeing her apparition in various parts of the house, particularly in the main hall and on the staircase.

In the grounds surrounding the manor, there have been reports of a phantom horse and rider, believed to be connected to the manor’s long history. The kitchen area has also been the site of various unexplained occurrences, including objects moving on their own and the smell of cooking when no one is using the facilities.
