Castle Menzies
Castle Menzies, located in Weem, Perthshire, Scotland, dates back to the 16th century and was the ancestral seat of Clan Menzies for over 400 years. The castle played a significant role in Scottish history, hosting Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746 during the Jacobite Rising. Restored in the 20th century, it now stands as a testament to Renaissance architecture and Scottish heritage.
The castle’s long history has given rise to several reported ghostly encounters. One of the most frequently mentioned apparitions is that of a “Green Lady,” believed to be the spirit of a young woman who died of a broken heart after her lover was killed. Visitors have reported seeing her ghostly figure wandering the castle’s corridors and grounds, often accompanied by a sudden drop in temperature.
Another recurring supernatural phenomenon involves the sound of phantom bagpipes echoing through the castle halls, particularly at night. Some attribute this to the spirit of a piper who once served the Menzies clan.
In the castle’s Great Hall, staff and visitors have reported sensing an unseen presence and feeling as if they’re being watched. Some have even claimed to see the faint outline of a figure dressed in period clothing, believed to be a former clan chief.
The castle’s cellars are said to be particularly active, with reports of unexplained footsteps, whispers, and the sensation of being touched by unseen hands. Some visitors have reported feeling overwhelmed by a sense of sadness or dread in certain areas of the castle, particularly in the upper floors where family members once resided.
