Carbrook Hall

Carbrook Hall

Carbrook Hall in Sheffield, England dates back to the 12th century when it was constructed as a manor house. The current Grade II listed building largely dates to the 16th and 17th centuries when it served as the home of the Bright family. During the English Civil War, it was used as a meeting place for Parliamentarians. The hall later became a public house in the 19th century.

Numerous ghost stories surround Carbrook Hall. The most frequently reported apparition is that of John Bright, a former owner and staunch Parliamentarian during the Civil War. Witnesses have described seeing a ghostly figure in 17th-century attire pacing the rooms or sitting by the fireplace. Some claim to have heard disembodied voices and footsteps when the building was empty.

Another commonly reported phenomenon is the smell of tobacco smoke manifesting suddenly in various areas, particularly in the old Oak Room. This scent has been attributed to the spirits of past patrons from its days as a pub.

Staff and visitors have reported objects moving on their own, especially in the kitchen area. Glasses and plates have allegedly been seen sliding across surfaces or falling off shelves without explanation.

Cold spots and sudden temperature drops have been experienced throughout the building, often accompanied by a sense of unease or being watched. Some people have reported feeling touched or pushed by unseen hands, particularly on the upper floors.

In the cellar, there have been accounts of a ghostly dog appearing and disappearing, as well as the sound of barking when no animals were present.
