Cadbury Castle
Cadbury Castle, an Iron Age hillfort in South Somerset, has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. The site is believed by some to be the legendary Camelot of King Arthur, though archaeological evidence suggests it was primarily occupied during the Iron Age and Roman periods. The castle’s strategic location atop a steep hill provided an excellent vantage point for its inhabitants.
Over the centuries, Cadbury Castle has become associated with various ghostly encounters. One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of King Arthur himself, said to ride a white horse around the perimeter of the castle on midsummer’s eve. Witnesses have described seeing a ghostly figure in medieval armor, accompanied by the sound of hoofbeats echoing across the hill.
Another persistent legend involves a spectral guard who appears at the castle’s entrance. Visitors have reported encountering a figure dressed in ancient armor, standing watch as if protecting the site from intruders. Some accounts describe the guard vanishing into thin air when approached.
The castle’s underground chambers have also been the source of paranormal activity. Explorers have reported hearing disembodied voices and footsteps echoing through the tunnels, as well as feeling unseen presences brushing past them in the darkness.
Local folklore tells of a ghostly procession that appears on certain nights, featuring knights and ladies in medieval attire moving silently across the hillfort. Some witnesses claim to have seen this ethereal parade accompanied by the faint sound of medieval music.
