Bolsover Castle
Bolsover Castle, located in Derbyshire, England, has a rich history dating back to the 11th century. Originally built by the Peverel family, the castle was later acquired by Sir George Talbot in the 16th century. In 1617, Sir Charles Cavendish began constructing the current castle on the site of the medieval fortress.
The castle gained notoriety for its reported paranormal activity. One of the most famous ghost stories involves the “Grey Lady,” believed to be the spirit of a young woman who died falling from the Terrace Range. Visitors and staff have reported seeing her apparition wandering the castle grounds.
Another frequently reported entity is the ghost of Sir Charles Cavendish himself. Witnesses claim to have seen his spectral figure in period clothing, often near the fountain garden or in the Little Castle.
The castle’s Riding School is said to be haunted by the sounds of phantom horses and the echoes of soldiers’ footsteps. Some visitors have reported feeling a sudden chill or sensing an unseen presence in this area.
In the Venus Garden, people have reported seeing the ghostly figure of a young boy playing. The identity of this spirit remains unknown, but his playful laughter has been heard by numerous witnesses.
The kitchen area is reportedly haunted by the spirit of a former cook, with staff and visitors claiming to smell phantom cooking odors and hearing the clanging of pots and pans when no one is present.
Unexplained footsteps, doors opening and closing on their own, and sudden temperature drops have been reported throughout the castle. Some visitors have also claimed to experience feelings of unease or being watched in certain areas, particularly in the Little Castle and the Terrace Range.
