Ashwell Prison
Ashwell Prison, located in Rutland, England, operated from 1955 to 2011 as a Category C men’s prison. Originally constructed as a U.S. Air Force base during World War II, it was converted into a correctional facility in the post-war years. The prison’s history is marked by periods of unrest, including a significant riot in 2009 that caused extensive damage to the facility.
Paranormal activity at Ashwell Prison has been reported by both staff and inmates over the years. One of the most frequently encountered phenomena is the sound of heavy footsteps echoing through empty corridors, particularly in the older sections of the prison. Guards have reported seeing shadowy figures darting between cells during night shifts, only to find all inmates securely locked in their rooms upon investigation.
In the prison’s medical wing, staff members have described inexplicable cold spots and the sensation of being watched, even when alone in the area. Some have claimed to hear disembodied voices whispering and occasional screams coming from unoccupied rooms.
A particularly chilling account comes from a former inmate who reported waking up in the middle of the night to see a dark, hooded figure standing at the foot of his bed. The apparition reportedly vanished when the inmate called out to it. Similar sightings of this mysterious figure have been reported by others in various parts of the prison.
The exercise yard has also been a hotspot for paranormal activity, with multiple witnesses describing a misty form that appears to pace back and forth along the perimeter fence during foggy evenings.
