Ardgillan Castle

Ardgillan Castle

Ardgillan Castle, situated in Fingal, County Dublin, Ireland, was constructed in 1738 by Reverend Robert Taylor. The estate remained in the Taylor family until 1962 when it was sold to Heinrich Potts. In 1982, Dublin County Council acquired the property.

The castle’s most famous ghost story revolves around the “Lady’s Stairs,” a set of stone steps leading down to the beach. According to legend, the wife of the last Baron of Langford drowned while swimming in the area during the 19th century. Her ghost, known as the “White Lady,” is said to appear on the stairs, particularly on stormy nights. Witnesses have reported seeing a translucent female figure in a flowing white dress descending the steps towards the sea.

Another ghostly tale involves the spirit of a young soldier who allegedly haunts the castle’s corridors. During World War I, many officers were stationed at Ardgillan. One soldier is said to have fallen in love with a local girl but died before they could marry. His ghost is believed to wander the castle, perhaps searching for his lost love.

The castle’s kitchen is also rumored to be haunted. Staff and visitors have reported unexplained noises, such as the clattering of pots and pans when no one is present. Some have even claimed to smell phantom aromas of cooking food wafting through the air.

In the library, books have reportedly been found rearranged or moved from their shelves overnight, with no explanation. Some attribute this to the restless spirit of a former resident who was passionate about literature.
