Appuldurcombe House

Appuldurcombe House

Appuldurcombe House, located on the Isle of Wight, England, was built in the 18th century as a grand Baroque mansion for the Worsley family. The once-opulent estate fell into ruin after being damaged during World War II, leaving behind a haunting shell of its former glory. The house’s turbulent history has given rise to numerous ghost stories and reported paranormal encounters.

One of the most frequently sighted spirits is that of Sir Robert Worsley, a former owner of the house. Visitors have reported seeing his apparition wandering the grounds, particularly near the old stables. The ghost of a young woman, believed to be Eleanor Worsley, has been seen in the main hall, often accompanied by the sound of rustling fabric.

The house’s dark history includes tales of a monk who was allegedly bricked up alive in a secret room. Witnesses have reported hearing muffled screams and seeing a cowled figure in the vicinity of this hidden chamber. In the nursery, the cries of phantom children have been heard, along with the eerie sound of a music box playing.

Staff and visitors alike have experienced unexplained cold spots, sudden temperature drops, and the feeling of being watched throughout the property. Some have reported objects moving on their own and doors slamming shut without any apparent cause. The sound of horse-drawn carriages has been heard approaching the house, only for witnesses to find the driveway empty upon investigation.
