Anzio Army Camp
Anzio Army Camp, located in the Staffordshire Moorlands, was established during World War II as a training ground for British and American troops. The camp played a crucial role in preparing soldiers for the Allied invasion of Italy, particularly the landings at Anzio in 1944. After the war, the site continued to be used for military training exercises until its closure in the 1980s.
Over the years, Anzio Army Camp has gained a reputation for paranormal activity. Visitors and former personnel have reported numerous ghostly encounters. One of the most frequently mentioned apparitions is that of a young soldier in World War II-era uniform, often seen wandering the grounds at dusk. Some witnesses claim to have heard his footsteps echoing through empty buildings.
Another recurring phenomenon involves the sound of military vehicles and equipment. People have reported hearing the rumble of tanks and the roar of aircraft engines, despite the camp being long abandoned. These phantom sounds are said to be particularly intense during the anniversary of the Anzio landings.
In the old officers’ quarters, staff members working on site maintenance have reported feeling an unseen presence watching them. Some have described sudden cold spots and the sensation of being touched on the shoulder when no one else was present.
One of the most chilling accounts comes from a group of hikers who claimed to have seen a ghostly formation of soldiers marching across the parade ground at midnight. The spectral troops reportedly vanished into thin air as they approached the edge of the camp.
