Alcester Town Hall

Alcester Town Hall

Alcester Town Hall, located in the historic market town of Alcester in Stratford-on-Avon, dates back to the 17th century. The Grade II listed building has served various purposes over the years, including as a courtroom, police station, and community gathering place. Its rich history has given rise to several documented ghost stories that have intrigued locals and visitors alike.

One of the most frequently reported paranormal occurrences involves the apparition of a man in Victorian-era clothing, often seen walking through the main hall and disappearing into walls. Witnesses have described him as tall, with a stern expression and wearing a top hat. Some believe this to be the ghost of a former magistrate who presided over cases in the building.

Another persistent tale involves the sound of heavy footsteps echoing through the empty corridors late at night. Staff members working after hours have reported hearing these footsteps, only to find no one present when investigating. Some have speculated that these could be the restless spirits of prisoners once held in the building’s former cells.

In the 1990s, during a renovation project, workers reported strange occurrences such as tools mysteriously moving overnight and unexplained cold spots in certain areas of the building. One worker claimed to have seen a misty figure float across the room before vanishing.

The Town Hall’s clock tower has also been the subject of ghostly encounters. Visitors have reported seeing a shadowy figure peering out from the tower windows, particularly on foggy evenings. Local legend suggests this could be the spirit of a clockkeeper who died while on duty in the late 19th century.
