Acton Burnell Castle
Acton Burnell Castle, located in Shropshire, England, dates back to the 13th century when it was built by Robert Burnell, Chancellor to King Edward I. The fortified manor house served as a residence and played host to the first English parliament that included representatives of the commons in 1283. Today, only the outer walls and towers of this once-grand structure remain standing.
The castle’s long history has given rise to several reported ghostly encounters. Visitors and staff have described hearing unexplained footsteps echoing through the empty halls and rooms, particularly at night. Some have reported seeing a shadowy figure of a man in medieval clothing walking along the castle’s ramparts, only to vanish when approached.
One of the most frequently reported apparitions is that of a young woman in a flowing white dress, believed to be the ghost of a servant girl who died tragically on the premises centuries ago. Witnesses have described seeing her gliding through the ruins, often disappearing through solid walls.
Another persistent legend involves the sound of children’s laughter and playful running footsteps heard in areas where no children are present. Some visitors have reported feeling a sudden chill or sensing an unseen presence watching them while exploring the castle grounds.
During paranormal investigations conducted at the site, electronic voice phenomena (EVP) recordings have reportedly captured whispered voices and unexplained sounds. Some investigators have also reported equipment malfunctions and battery drains while working within the castle ruins, phenomena often associated with paranormal activity.
